Most first-time buyers of artificial plants focus on the unit price and treat everything else as detail. The order then arrives with a freight cost that was never in the budget, or with cartons that do not fit the container the way the plan assumed. This guide explains the three numbers that actually determine what you pay per piece.
MOQ is per SKU, not per order
Minimum order quantity is set per SKU, and it varies with the size of the item. Large trees typically carry a lower MOQ than small bundles, because a tree is already a substantial piece while a small bundle is not.
The reason MOQ exists is production, not sales policy. Most artificial plants are assembled in batches: stems, leaves and finishes are prepared in runs, and splitting a run across many buyers raises the cost of every piece. A low MOQ on a large item is possible because one piece already justifies its share of a run.
What this means practically: MOQ is a constraint per line item, not a barrier to your total order. If you need six SKUs at modest quantities each, you are not blocked — you are building a mixed order, which is the normal way buyers in this category work.
CBM matters more than weight
Ocean freight on artificial plants is charged on volume, not weight. The measure is CBM — cubic metres — and it is the single most under-checked figure on a quotation.
Consider two SKUs that look comparable on price. One is a 220cm tree that ships four pieces per carton at roughly 0.15 CBM. Another is a 110cm plant that ships four pieces per carton at a similar volume. The unit prices may sit close together, but what you are buying per CBM is very different, and CBM is what the shipping line charges you for.
Four figures to request for every SKU you are considering:

A carton of artificial plants can weigh under 10 kg and occupy 0.15 CBM. You are shipping air, and the volumetric figure is what you are charged for. Comparing unit prices without CBM is comparing incomplete costs.
Container loading: how the mix drives your cost
Container loading is where a mixed order either works for you or against you, and it is not intuitive.
A 40HQ holds a very different number of pieces depending on which SKU you load. Tall trees consume vertical space inefficiently — they are wide and light, and the container is not filled efficiently around them. Small bundles pack densely and bring the average freight cost per piece down.
The practical consequence: if your order is all tall trees, your freight cost per piece will be high regardless of the quantity discount you negotiated. If your order mixes tall anchor pieces with a volume of smaller items, the smaller items fill the space around the trees and the blended rate improves considerably.
This is the main reason experienced buyers in this category resist ordering single-SKU containers. The quantity discount rarely compensates for the loading inefficiency.
Three loading questions worth asking your supplier before you commit:
- How many cartons to fill a 20GP and a 40HQ for this SKU? This gives you the natural order break points.
- What is the loading plan — floor-loaded or palletised? Palletising protects goods but costs volume; on bulky light goods the trade-off usually favours floor loading.
- What is the blended CBM if I mix my intended list? This is the number to compare against a competing quotation.
Building a mixed order that ships well
A workable approach for a first container:
- Start with your anchor items. These are the pieces the design depends on — usually the tall specimens. Confirm their MOQ and carton CBM first.
- Add mid-layer items. These are the volume of the order and the main lever on your blended freight rate.
- Fill with small items. Bundles, stems and low pieces pack densely. They improve the loading profile and are usually the easiest to increase in quantity.
- Ask for the loading calculation before confirming. A supplier who can produce this has done it before; one who cannot is a risk.
The target is not to hit a round number of pieces. It is to fill the container's volume without leaving unusable gaps — which is why the loading plan, not the piece count, is what you should review.
Documentation and inspection
Two items that are easy to defer and expensive to fix late:
- Confirm what documentation is available for your destination market at the quotation stage. Requirements differ by country, and asking after production means re-specifying rather than choosing.
- Agree the inspection basis before shipping. Whether that is a pre-shipment photo set, a third-party inspection, or a sample from the production run, agree it in writing before the goods are packed. Once cartons are sealed, your leverage drops sharply.
